Criticism of the Great Books Approach

A prototypical article still needs to be written for this category. The kind of writing we have in mind here is suggested by Rick Simonson and Scott Walken's book, Multi-Cultural Literacy. Their criticisms of E.D. Hirsch JR's work on "Cultural Literacy" have implications for Great Books "canons."
  1. There is an implicit danger that the lists will be "overridingly static"

  2. The canons tend to reflect a "white, male, academic, Eastern U.S., Euro-centric bias" that is unduly limited in scope and appreciation of "multi-cultural" contributions to culture.
This space in the journal invites criticism of limitations and liabilities to the Great Books approach.
