Criticism of the Great Books Approach
A prototypical article still needs to be written for this category. The kind of writing we have in mind here is suggested by Rick Simonson and Scott Walken's book, Multi-Cultural Literacy. Their criticisms of E.D. Hirsch JR's work on "Cultural Literacy" have implications for Great Books "canons."
- There is an implicit danger that the lists will be "overridingly static"
- The canons tend to reflect a "white, male, academic, Eastern U.S., Euro-centric bias" that is unduly limited in scope and appreciation of "multi-cultural" contributions to culture.
This space in the journal invites criticism of limitations and liabilities to the Great Books approach.
