Dr. Michael R.
Collings Dr. Michael R. Collings received his Ph.D. in English Literature (Milton and the Renaissance) from the University of California, Riverside, in 1977. Before that, he had received the M.A. in English from the University of California, Riverside in 1973; a B.A. in English with a History minor from Whittier College in 1969; and an A.A. from Bakersfield College in 1967. Following his education at UCR, Dr. Collings taught part-time at UCR, San Bernardino Valley Community College, and elsewhere until he received a 1-year appointment as lecturer in English at UCLA. At the close of the 1978-1979 school year, he was invited to teach in the Communication Division at Pepperdine and has remained with the university since then. While with the Communication Division, he initiated the Writing
Center as part of the Freshman Composition Program and helped then-chair Dr. Stewart
Hudson and other faculty in developing the Creative Writing program, including expanding
the literary magazine, Expressionists. When the Composition faculty moved to the
Humanities Division, he became involved with the English program, teaching the survey
course as well as specialty courses in Milton, Seventeenth Century Literature, and the
